Open,
evergreen tree with fern-like, 2-pinnate, hairy leaves, 12cm long, each with
40-80 linear, glaucous to silvery
leaflets. Terminal racemes 10-20cm
long of spherical fragrant yellow flower heads, 5mm across, are borne from
winter to
spring. Quite a large growing tree. Not particularly hardy so
needs a sheltered site. From Australia.
Acer capillipes Snake-bark maple
Deciduous,
spreading tree. Has lobed, bright green leaves that turn brilliant red and
orange in autumn. Older branches are
striped green and white. Requires
full sun and well drained soil. Introduced from Japan by Charles Sargent in
1882.
