Climbing and Rambling Roses

 

Rose       Arthur Bell            Climber

Large, semi-double flowers, becoming cup shaped when open. Bright yellow fading to cream with age. Reliable. Fragrant.

 

Rose       Bright Fire             Climber

The flowers of this rose are of medium to large size and have high centres when open, becoming more rounded as the petals reflex. Blooming continues over a long period on a vigorous, stiffly branching plant that can go upto 4m with support. Has large leathery leaves.

 

Rose       Calypso Climber

Very double, globular blooms are blush with a deep flesh centre. They have a pendulous habit, hanging down over long, arching canes that have almost no prickles. Makes an attractive cut flower. Dark green oval leaves are serrated at the tips. Best trained on a wall or fence.

 

Rose       Ena Harkness       Climber

A climbing version of the well known crimson-scarlet Hybrid Tea. Better as a climber, where its hanging heads display themselves effectively from a high wall. Summer flowering, with a few later.

 

Rose       Etoile de Holland  Climber

Possibly the best red for covering walls etc. Will thrive in most types of soil. Has hanging flowers, velvety red and richly fragrant. Dark green foliage. Flowers best in summer, followed by some autumn flowering.

 

Rose       Felicite Et Perpetue             Climber

Sempervirens climbing rose with long, slender stems. Clusters of rosette, fully double, blush-pink to white flowers, 4cm across, appear in mid-summer. Small leaves are semi-evergreen. Prune spent wood only. Can climb up to 5m.

 

Rose       Francois Juranville              Climber

Bright salmon-pink blooms appear as clusters over a long flowering period in the summer. They are flat  and deeper pink in the centre with a yellow base. The petals are quilled and quartered, and the fragrance is reminiscent of apples. Can grow  very tall (8m), the canes are upright and very vigorous with shiny dark leaves, bronze green at the edges and a few prickles.  Very happy to climb through a tree and even good for ground cover.

 

Rose       Glorie de Dijon     Climber

One of the most favoured roses in the world. Fat, squat buds open to reveal large, rich buff pink blooms that are large, full, globular, quartered and quilled. The centre petals are apricot and the outer petals fade quickly in the sun. There is a pleasant scent. Vigorous climbing growth best on a wall or a pillar, bending down the shoots to promote laterals and more blooms. The reddish canes have hooked prickles. Blooms from summer to first frost. Spraying recommended.

 

Rose       Golden showers Climber

Stiff, upright climbing rose that may be pruned to grow as shrub. In summer/autumn produces many fragrant, pointed,

double, yellow flowers, 10cm across, that open flat. Height 2m. Requires full sun and well drained soil.

 

Rose       Handel    Climber

A star of the climbing roses because of its rare flower colour, it is a creamy colour edged with rosy pink.  Repeat

flowering.

An excellent climbing form of the well known floribunda. It seems to take on an added grace when grown as a climber.

Sprays of medium sized, pure white flowers are produced repeatedly. Will climb to 3m.

Ovoid buds open to small, semi-double flowers that are produced in huge clusters of up to 30 on very strong stems.

Exceptionally vigorous, large trusses of pure white flowers and golden stamens. Strong fragrance. Ideal to climb through trees. Height upto 6m.

Rose       Super Elfin            Climber

Clusters of vivid orange-scarlet flowers with slight fragrance. Good rambling type habit with mid green semi-glossy foliage. Can climb to 3m.

 

Rose       Swanlake              Climber

The well shaped buds of this rose open slowly to double, well-formed, fragrant blooms with 50 pale pink petals. They are produced on long stems and are suitable for exhibition. Flowering is continuous, although the most shapely and long lasting blooms are seen in autumn. The plant has moderately vigorous growth habit and foliage is mid-green, abundant and disease resistant. Ideal for pillars, tripods and fences.

 

Rose       The New Dawn     Climber

Medium sized, silvery blush-pink flowers, deepening towards the centre, produced in clusters. The forerunner of the modern perpetual-flowering limbers, and still one the best and most vigorous in its class. Glossy foliage.

 

Rose       Zephrine Drouhin                Climber

Thornless rose. This is one of the best and most reliable of climbers. Great quantities of fragrant, deep rose-pink flowers are produced with exceptional continuity. It is particularly happy on a north wall and may be grown as a hedge.

 

Rose       Albertine                               Climber (Rambler)

This rose is ideal for growing up old tree stumps as it is a vigorous rambler, the flowers are pale pink and very fragrant it flowers in early summer.

 

Rose       Dorothy Perkins  Climber (Rambler)

Full of rose pink blooms for a whole month in summer. Small, fragrant flowers in huge clusters supported with glossy dark green foliage. Can be trained or left to ramble over things - can grow up to 6m in a good season. Spraying is highly recommended.

 

Rose       Rambling Rector  Climber (Rambler)

Rampant rambler with strong, arching stems and abundant grey-green foliage. Clusters of many cupped to flat, semi-double, scented, creamy white lowers 4cm across, showing golden stamens, are borne in summer, followed by spherical red hips in autumn. Can be grown up to 6m.

 

Rose       Super Excelsa      Climber (Rambler)

This rose has all the good qualities of Excelsa with the added bonus of repeat flowering through summer and autumn. The crimson-red flowers appear in small clusters and its vigorous and pliable growth makes it perfect for training over arches and pergolas. Spraying recommended.

 

Rose       Super Fairy           Climber (Rambler)

Light pink and double with 15-25 petals, borne in large clusters, the fragrant blooms are 35mm across. The foliage is medium green and glossy on a strong plant with pliable canes. Flowering is continuous which is very rare in a rambling rose.

 

Floribunda Roses

 

Rose       Arthur Bell            Floribunda

Tall bush, flowers large, very fragrant. Golden yellow. Bushy growth. Weather and disease resistant. Flowers early, long lasting blooms.

 

Rose       Champagne Cocktail          Floribunda

This has everything: shapely blooms, a gorgeous fragrance and low susceptibility to disease. The pale yellow, medium-sized double flowers, strongly flecked and splashed with pink, and have 20 petals with yellow undersides. There is a reliable repetition of bloom after the first flush. It has a bushy habit and glossy mid-green foliage.

 

Rose       Chinatown            Floribunda

A giant for the back of the border. Large double, clear yellow flowers with a good fragrance. Very tough and healthy. Fragrant.

 

Rose       Dearest  Floribunda

Large, double flowers of warmest salmon-pink. Good, bushy, branching growth. One of the most beautiful of the floribundas, although it does require regular spraying. Quite fragrant.

 

Rose       Elizabeth of Glamis             Floribunda

Also called Irish Beauty. Needs good soil. Blooms are orange salmon, medium sized and fragrant. Foliage is dark green and semi-glossy. Moderately vigorous and upright. Requires a lot of care but still the winner of many awards.

'Haressay'

A cherry red, slightly scented floribunda rose.

'Poulmax'

Shrimp pink coloured, fragrant blooms. Rose of the Year for 1999.

 

Rose       Friend for Life      Floribunda

The flowers of this rose, which are borne in large clusters, are medium in size, semi-double with 10-14 petals and clear rose pink in colour. They have good substance and last well. The foliage is dark green and glossy on a plant with compact growth habit. Good resistance to disease.

 

Rose       Glenfiddich           Floribunda

Golden amber, medium sized slightly fragrant blooms. Dark green foliage. Good disease resistance. Vigorous and upright growth. Deservedly popular, grows well in northern climes.

 

Rose       Hope       Floribunda

A low growing deep red floribunda. Slightly scented, it is bushy and compact. The blooms are carried on large trusses throughout the season. Extremely free flowering.

Rose  Iceberg                            Floribunda

This is a very popular rose that has won many prizes, the flowers are pure white and slightly fragrant. It is repeat flowering and so will go on in to autumn. Also called Schneewittchen. Spraying is highly recommended.

 

Rose       L'Aimant                                Floribunda

The flowers of this rose are a warm shade of salmon-pink, fading to rose pink, and are carried sometimes singly but usually in clusters of several blooms which open like small-scale large flowered roses, with 30 or so petals forming neat centres. The blooms become cupped as the petals reflex, yielding an excellent fragrance. Flowers continually in summer and into autumn, with good weather resistance. Good for cut flowers. Vigorous growth.

 

Rose       Margaret Merril   Floribunda

Dainty, high-centred buds opening to white flowers overlaid with a satin pink sheen. These possess a delicacy not frequently found in modern roses, and they have quite an exceptional fragrance. Dark green, disease resistant foliage.

Very fragrant blooms. A deep pink floribunda.

 

Rose       Oranges and Lemons        Floribunda

These flowers have distinctive stripes of yellow and orange. The blooms are full and borne in clusters on strong straight stems. Excellent bloom production. Foliage is mahogany-tinted, glossy dark green and is very disease resistant. Very vigorous and can be  trained as a climber. Unique and worthwhile.

This innovative variety has blooms with remarkable colouring, very deep purple striped and flecked with white and mauve pink. Has some fragrance. Has glossy green foliage. Requires regular spraying.

 

Rose       Red Gold                                Floribunda

Prolific flowering, medium sized petals, golden yellow, edged cherry red. Upright growth, requires spraying, good rain resistance. Good for bedding.

 

Rose       Romance               Floribunda

This bushy shrub has medium pink, double flowers with 20 petals. They have a slight fragrance and appear continuously from summer to autumn. The foliage is medium, dark green, semi-glossy and healthy.

 

Rose       Rose 2000              Floribunda

A dwarf Floribunda with small to medium sized blooms of light coral pink in colour. Flower trusses are borne throughout the summer. It makes a very bushy and spreading plant. Ideal for growing in containers.

 

Rose       Southampton       Floribunda

A shapely apricot coloured rose, blooms carried in medium sized clusters on a tall and spreading bush. The flowers do not fade with age. Glossy disease resistant foliage. Probably the best orange-apricot floribunda.

This floribunda rose has lovely pink flowers, which are fragrant.

 

Hybrid Tea Roses

 

Rose       Abbeyfield Rose  Hybrid Tea

'Cocbrose'

Has deep pink to rose red, very double and large, well formed flowers consisting of 35 petals; they have a slight fragrance and are repeat flowering. Mid-green, semi-glossy foliage appears on a bushy plant of medium height. Hardy and moderately resistant to disease.

 

Rose       Blessings              Hybrid Tea

A profusion of pretty, salmon-pink blooms produced continuously on vigorous growth. Healthy, reliable and fragrant.

 

Rose       Blue Moon             Hybrid Tea

Silvery-lilac - undoubtedly the best of this colour. Well formed flowers are freely produced. Strong lemon scent. Has average disease resistance, The flowers are excellent for cutting.

 

Rose       Chicago Peace     Hybrid Tea

A good sport from Peace with the same robust qualities. This rose is ideal for hedging, although it makes a very elegant rose on its own. Average disease resistance. Colour is pink, shading to yellow at the base of the flower.

 

Rose       Deep Secret          Hybrid Tea

Scented, classic deep red flowers borne in trusses. Very fragrant indeed. Large blooms, 40 petals. Foliage is dark green and glossy. Has good disease resistance and vigorous upright growth, medium sized bush.

 

Rose       Elina        Hybrid Tea

'Dicjana' 'Peaudouce'

This variety is a strong, vigorous bush with excellent dense, glossy dark green, disease-resistant foliage acts as a foil to the huge, magnificently formed deep cream blooms. The flowers, which are often 15cm across, last well when picked and are beautiful at all stages of development from bud to full bloom, forming perfect exhibition subjects. Slightly fragrant.

 

Rose       Ena Harkness       Hybrid Tea

This was bred by an amateur hybridist for cool climates where blooms can be of the highest exhibition quality. Of the purest unfading crimson and with the true Damask perfume of its parent 'Crimson Glory'. Foliage is rather sparse but growth is strong and upright, and is disease resistant.

The creamy orange flowers on this variety are full petalled, symmetrical in form, and open cleanly in all weathers. There is a good scent, and bloom continues through summer and autumn.

Elegant buds of coppery-orange veined with red. The opening petals  are attractively waved and the flowers remain pleasing to the end. Free and continuous flowering. Reliable and fragrant. A good cut flower.

A lovely rose, well formed, medium sized flowers are a strong silvery salmon-pink. Double, lasting colour and fragrant. Flower production is amazing and the repeat cycle is exceptionally rapid. Light green semi-glossy foliage.

Compact, bushy, upright and free flowering. Flowers fully double and urn-shaped. Borne singly and in clusters, Unfading scarlet-crimson. Slightly scent. Leaves are plentiful, matt, dark green and red tinted.

Large blooms, up to 15cm across, on vigorous taller than average bushes. The name is misleading as the habit is very different to Peace, upright not bushy. Strongly scented, free flowering. Good general disease resistance, foliage rust susceptible so spraying recommended.

A valuable white rose of delicate beauty and perfect high centred scrolled formation. Dark green foliage; vigorous branching growth.

Rose       Pudsey Bear         Hybrid Tea

This variety bears its medium-sized, deep yellow blooms very freely from summer to autumn. They have some scent. It grows to medium height and is covered with ample dark green foliage. 'Pudsey Bear' was named to raise money for children’s charity.

 

Rose       Renaissance         Hybrid Tea

A very highly scented variety, it has pale blush pink flowers with a centre of coral. The perfectly formed blooms are loose, giving a less formal appearance to a sophisticated colour. Repeat flowering and bushy.

 

Rose       Rose Gaujard        Hybrid Tea

Plentiful, large blooms; cherry red with a silvery white reverse. Strong, healthy and reliable. A very easy rose to grow.

 

Rose       Super Star             Hybrid Tea

Intense vermilion; one of the most brilliant of roses, ideal where a splash of colour is required. Strong branching growth producing a continuous display of flowers. Generally healthy, but a possibility of mildew in Autumn, so spraying is recommended. Some fragrance.

A beautiful variety of a unique and lovely shade of amber. Very free flowering but it requires good soil conditions. Very fragrant.

Rose       Canary Bird           Shrub

This is a spectacular rose in the right place, where it has room to spread its arching garlands of single  bright yellow blooms in late spring. The blooms are small and borne close to the brownish red stems, and nestle among light green, ferny leaflets. They open saucer shaped and have a pleasing scent. Requires little or no pruning and is a healthy rose, but avoid cold winds which can damage the early buds.

 

Rose       Jacobite Rose      Shrub

'Alba Maxima'

This rose has many names and it is the creamiest of all the Alba's.  A popular rose for centuries, growing into a large bush. Flowers are 8-10cm in diameter, opening flat with a faint buff edge and a lovely fragrance. Pale grey-green foliage covers the canes, which have a few large prickles. Flowers during summer, needs little pruning and is disease resistant.

 

Rose       Maiden's Blush    Shrub

The flowers of this rose are creamy white flushed with pink. They are double and long lasting on the medium-sized, compact plant, which is hardier than most. Repeat flowering and scented.

 

Rose       Mme Isaac Pereire              Shrub

This famous rose has enjoyed almost universal praise. The huge, deep rose pink blooms are full and well formed upon opening, later becoming blowzy; a purple hint adds to the charm, especially in autumn. The very fragrant flowers are sometimes cupped and sometimes quartered, and they usually appear in clusters. A vigorous shrub and best trained, where it can produce more laterals and blooms. Small prickles and deep green leaves. Does well in poor soils and in cool shade.

 

Rose       Penelope               Shrub

A strong, branching and healthy shrub bearing large trusses of creamy-pink flowers with great freedom; repeating well. Small coral-pink hips. Fragrant. One of the best in its class.

Rose  Rosa Mundi                    Shrub

(R.gallica versicolour). A sport from 'Officinalis' and an equally good shrub but with crimson flowers striped white, not just plain. A very showy plant, giving a wonderful effect in the garden. Will form a very good low hedge.

 

Rose       Rosa Rubrifolia     Shrub

'R.glauca'

Arching reddish purple, thornless shoots are well furnished with broadly oval, heavily serrated, greyish purple leaves made up of 5 to 9 leaflets.. Borne in small clusters the flowers are 2.5cm across, single, star-like in formation and soft lilac pink in colour with soft creamy yellow stamens; they appear in early summer. Has good hips, red first then coppery purple in autumn. Very popular for flower arranging.

 

Rose       The Fairy               Shrub

Dense, cushion-forming, dwarf cluster flowered bush rose with abundant, dark green foliage. Fragrant, pointed, fully double flowers, 12cm across, are pale creamy-pink, tinted buff, and are borne in summer-autumn.

 

Rose       Yesterday             Shrub

This rose has won many awards and is well recommended for the garden; its semi-double flowers are borne in clusters that make a beautiful spectacle when in full bloom. They are mid to violet pink and the buds are a darker shade against the open flowers. The blooms last well when cut. This medium sized shrub with thin and vigorous, disease resistant growth forms an attractive round bush.

 

Rose       Ballerina                  Shrub (Ground Cover)

One of summers treats is to see hundreds of small single, shallow cupped light pink flowers cramming themselves all over this bush. Hard to fault, with a first marathon blooming followed by a second crop in the autumn. Graceful rounded habit and abundant mid green foliage. easy to prune.

 

Rose       Max Graf                  Shrub (Ground Cover)

Very important as it is the ancestor of most of the modern Ground Cover Roses and many shrub roses. Long, trailing prostrate shoots with very attractive, disease resistant wrinkled foliage. The shapely single flowers are soft rose-pink with golden stamens. It flowers only once in the season. Excellent for covering banks and steep slopes. Very hardy.

Rose  Nozomi  Shrub (Ground Cover)

Excellent ground cover, especially in a rock garden. Habit is creeping, stem-rooting, mound forming or low-climbing. Pale blush-pink to white flowers are single and appear in delicate clusters just above the shiny dark-green, red tinted foliage.
